Boar Nutrition for Optimum Sperm Production
نویسندگان
چکیده
Natural service boars and boars who’s semen is collected for artificial insemination make up a relatively small portion of the pig population. This may partially explain the limited amount of data on the nutritional requirements and feeding practices of adult boars. Several research and literature reviews have been done, Kemp and den Hartog (1989), Colenbrander and Kemp (1990), Close and Roberts (1993), Brown (1994), Patience et al., (1995), Close and Cole (2000), Wilson (2000) and Kemp and Soede (2001).

The Anatomy & Physiology of Sperm Production in Boars
Introduction The reproductive efficiency of the breeding herd depends upon the fertility of the boar. Male fertility is essential since the boar's DNA is the primary mechanism through which genetic improvements can efficiently be accomplished. In production settings, the critical event, which begins the reproductive process, is the meeting of sperm and eggs inside the female reproductive tract....
متن کاملBoar acrosin. I. Purification and preliminary characterization of a proteinase from boar sperm acrosomes.
Acrosin is a proteolytic enzyme used by sperm to digest a path through the zona pellucida of the ovum. In ejaculated sperm it is inactivated by a proteinase inhibitor from seminal plasma that also inhibits trypsin. This inhibitor is removed or inactivated during the residence in the female reproductive tract as a part of the capacitation process. The boar acrosin-inhibitor complex was partially...
متن کاملO-16: Metabolism of Exogenous Fatty Acids, Fatty Acid-Mediated Cholesterol Efflux, PKA and PKC Pathways in Boar Sperm Acrosome Reaction
Background: For understanding the roles of fatty acids on the induction of acrosome reaction which occurs under association of cholesterol efflux and PKA or PKC pathways in boar spermatozoa, metabolic fate of alone and combined radiolabeled 14C-oleic acid and 3H-linoleic acid incorporated in the sperm was compared, and behavior of cholesterol and effects of PKA and PKC inhibitors upon fatty aci...
متن کاملSupplemental effect of varying L-cysteine concentrations on the quality of cryopreserved boar semen.
Cryopreservation is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species, which leads to lipid peroxidation of the sperm membrane and consequently a reduction in sperm motility and decreased fertility potential. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of L-cysteine needed for cryopreservation of boar semen. Twelve boars provided semen of proven motility and morphol...
متن کاملComparison of Motility, Acrosome, Viability and ATP of Boar Sperm with or without Cold Shock Resistance in Liquid Semen at 17°C and 4°C, and Frozen-thawed Semen
This study was designed to analyze boar sperm to compare motility, acrosome morphology, viability and ATP by various preservation methods between Duroc boar A with cold shock resistance sperm and Duroc boar B with cold shock sensitivity sperm. Semen volume, sperm concentration, motility and normal acrosome between Duroc boar A and B did not show any differences within 2 h after collection. Ther...
